Animal Adventures Family Zoo & Rescue Center (Bolten, MA)

Back in August, we visited Animal Adventures, one of New England’s largest, privately owned rescue centers/zoos. I always love seeing animals especially exotic ones so I was excited to finally get a chance to check it out.

I first found about the rescue center/zoo while surfing  Only In Your State, which is a cool website for finding new things to do and places to visit in each of the 50 states. If you’ve never been on the website before, I highly recommend checking it out when you get a moment.

Located in Bolten, MA, Animal Adventures is just about an hour or so drive away from Boston, making it very convenient for anyone who lives in the city or the surrounding area.

It’s also relatively cheap with general admission prices ranging from free to $14, depending on the age of the guest. With general admission, you can roam around the facility freely and view exotic animals including alligators, lynx, snakes, kangaroos, and much more. Without a double, my favorite animal was the Carpathian Lynx. I find big cats to be fascinating.

There are also a bunch of friendly goats that you can interact with outside of the main entrance and in the farm animal area.

Also, included with general admission are 30-minute shows that are offered at 11 am 1 pm & 3 pm. During these shows, animal handlers provide more information on the animals they have on-site as well as gives guests the opportunity to pet the animals that they showcase. We watched the 1 pm show, which featured a chinchilla, a snake, and an alligator.

If you’re interested in a private up-close encounter with an animal of your choice, there’s the option to pay an additional fee ($20 for the first person, $10 for each additional person).

Overall, Animal Adventures is a nice change of pace from the Franklin Park Zoo and the New England Aquarium, two of the more popular and go-to destinations for animals in the Boston-area. While Animal Adventures is certainly geared towards families, it’s really a good option for anyone to visit.
